How many hours of driving are required before I can test for my license in Massachusetts?

16 and 17 year old new drivers must log at least 40 hours of driving. New drivers that are 18 years or older do not have a practice driving time requirement.

16 and 17 year old new drivers must log at least 40 hours of driving in addition to the driver's education requirements. This time must be completed with an experienced, licensed driver that is at least 21 years old and has at least one year of driving experience.  

The RMV will accept 30 hours of driving supervised by a parent or guardian if the applicant completed a driver skills development program.

New drivers that are 18 years or older do not have a practice driving time requirement. However, we recommend that all new drivers log at least 40 hours of practice driving before testing for a license.

You must have your learner's permit before you can begin driving practice.
