Parent Information at The Next Street
What Role Do I Play in My Student's Driver's Ed Experience?
As the parent you are a driving force (pun intended) for your student. As they are still minors it is important that they have a guiding figure with them during this process. As a parent you are also required to participate and help them receive their license.
How can I do this?
- You are required by CT and the DMV to help your student achieve 40 hours of on road driving experience. This can be something as simple as letting them drive to the grocery store.
- They will more than likely need help getting to and from driving lessons.
- You may need to take them to the DMV or our facility to test.
- Help keep them on track while allowing them to handle this on their own.
- Gentle reminders about class
- Keeping a visible calendar for them
- Including your email to receive reminders and other important emails
- Offer to help with the extra driving
- Making sure that they are comfortable during the whole process. We never want our students to feel forced to drive
Checking in on Your Students Progress
If you student is taking driving lessons it is crucial that you check in with their instructor and get updates on their progress. Knowing where they are in their driving ability will allow you to better help them with the at home driving.
The driving lesson block is structured for you and your student to check in with the instructor before the drives starts and afterwards. When you are picking up your student, ask the instructor;
- How the drive went
- What needs to be worked on
- How much more training is recommended
- If the instructor has anything to note
You should be reviewing the evaluation form after every driving lesson. Knowing this information will allow you and your student to be on the same page when it comes to driving.
No Parents or Guardians in the Backseat During Driving Lessons
We are committed to providing all our students with a safe, professional, and effective learning environment. To ensure the highest quality of instruction and to maintain safety and focus on the driving lessons, The Next Street does not allow anyone besides enrolled students or Next Street personnel in the vehicle during driving lessons. There are no
exceptions to this policy. All driving lessons will be conducted with only the student and certified Next Street personnel.
Late Pick-Up Policy
This policy outlines the responsibility of parents or guardians to ensure appropriate transportation arrangements for their students after each lesson. The goal is to maintain a safe and efficient environment for all students and instructors.
1. Pick-Up and Drop-Off Locations: Lessons begin and end at designated pick-up/drop-off locations. These locations are communicated to parents or guardians in advance (can also be found in the student portal) and are intended to facilitate a smooth transition for students into and out of their lessons.
2. Responsibility for Timely Pick-Up: Parents or guardians are required to arrange appropriate transportation for their students to be picked up immediately at the end of each lesson.
3. Instructor Waiting Time: Instructors will remain with students for a maximum duration of 15 minutes following the end of their lesson to allow for any unforeseen delays.
4. Procedure for Late Pick-Up: After the 15-minute grace period, if a parent or guardian has not arrived and no other prearranged transportation is available, the instructor will no longer be responsible for supervising the student. The student will be left at the designated pick-up/drop-off location.
5. Contact Local Authorities: If the parent or guardian does not arrive within the 15-minute grace period and we are unable to reach them, we may contact the local authorities for assistance to ensure the safety of the student.
We encourage all parents or guardians to plan accordingly and communicate proactively to avoid any issues related to pick-up.
