What is the minimum driving school requirement to get a license in Massachusetts?

New teen drivers must take a 30 hour classroom program, 12 hours of private driving lessons, and 6 hours of observation. Adult new drivers over the age of 18 do not have a driver's ed requirement in MA.

New teen drivers must take a 30 hour classroom program, 12 hours of private driving lessons, and 6 hours of observation* at a State Approved Driving School.  Adult new drivers over the age of 18 do not have a driver's ed requirement in MA. 

 

* For students who received their permit prior to May 29th, these 6 hours are added onto the 40 hours of supervised driving with a parent, guardian, or other adult over 21 with a valid license over a year.  Students who received their permit on or after May 29, 2021 are required to complete the observation hours at a State Approved Driving School.
